Nightly reading is an important part of Reading in the fifth grade. Studies show that the more a child reads, the more successful that child will become in ALL of his or her academic subjects. In my class, I always encourage my students to find something enjoyable to read each night, be it a scary story, comic book, or online article about a favorite musician. When students choose what they read, they're more likely to enjoy what they read. The more they enjoy what they read, the better readers they become.
